  As far as we know, self-tapping screw is used most often where access to forming a joint can only be obtained from one side. They work generally by cutting their own thread as they screw into the base material. Usually a small hole is drilled in the base material and a screw sized hole is drilled in the top material, when the screw is pushed through the top section and aligned with the small hole, the screw cuts its own thread when it is tightened with a screw driver. The system works very well when used properly, but will also cause problems when abused.
