The Act of Vandalism

  • This info-graphic titled ‘The Act of Vandalism’ provides us an overview of importance of laws for vandalism. The term "vandalism" defines the conduct that defaces or damages public or private property. State laws and local regulations that prohibit vandalism might reference terms such as graffiti or criminal or malicious mischief.

Vandalism is the voluntary destruction or damaging of property in a manner that defaces, mars, or otherwise adds a physical blemish that decreases the property's value. Vandalism can also cover such offenses as:

    • carving your initials into public park trees or public benches
    • Writing your name on a store window with a marker
    • keying a car or puncturing its tires
    • breaking a building's windows
    • Knocking over grave markers

While vandalism regards damaging property, it is not forever the same as the crime of "destruction of property" or "damage to property." These crimes can cover more sincere physical damage, though some states use these accumulation to also cover acts of vandalism. To be convicted of vandalism, the prosecutor must prove that you have wrapped up each of these elements. For more information, please refer to the info-graphic below.
